“Who sews utopia, shall reap reality.“ This is the motto according to which the Italian sociologist Carlo Petrini founded the Slow Food movement in 1986. His intention was to create a counter model to fast food culture. Based on the conviction that good food is a basic human right, he ventured to protect this right by preserving a corresponding culture, biodiversity, and knowledge passed down through generations.

In turn, over the last 27 years an organization has developed with more than 100,000 members and subsidiaries in many different countries.

The regional representations, called convivia, put effort towards maintaining regional traditions and support the production and marketing of foods from artisan small farm structures. Producers and culinary businesses can become certified and receive a seal of quality as a symbol of the movement, a snail.
